Sopi (Sopp)
The end of a body of water, creek… A rather tricky word: meresopp is an arm of the sea, while tänavasopp is the end of a street and mälusopp a corner of the memory, while sopp alone can either mean a nook or cranny, a pouch or the bottom or deep recess of a sack, or, perhaps more usually, a long fishing-net with a rectangular opening. The street-name was planned for use between the new 2014 streets of Soodi and Lammi, but was thought too similar to the former, running the risk of mistakes and therefore dropped (but see Pagi).
Sõpruse (Sõprus)
Friendship. Of the various Soviet enforcements (replacing Endla in 1958), this one seems to have stuck. It wasn’t all bad.
Sossimäe (Sossimägi)
Intriguing! Firstly, it seems this is a ‘legacy name’, i.e. one that locals are familiar with, but dates, confirmation and origin myths are all missing. The plot development company chose the name, unwisely perhaps given its primary meaning of duffer, dud, clown or joker, inept or weak-willed person (someone a Brit might call a ‘tosser’!) or all or any of the other names I’ve had suggested: wimp, crackpot, stumblebum, maladroit, dud, etc., and a soss-sepp (see Sepa) could be a bodger, bungler or jerry-builder (from the marketing perspective, think Sipelga). The word could also be an onomatopœia conveying a hissing sound, or something steamy, both of which could correspond to the noise made by the former paper-mills’ chimneys; for some, it’s also synonymous with toss, or fizzling out (related to sosima, to whisper); and, lastly, possibly, poor-quality sandy loam. Street delineation still ill-defined and still (2025) being built around the back of Fahle kvartal, whose nightclub is also called Sossi.
Sõstra (Sõstar)
Currant. Three varieties indigenous to Estonia:
- Mage sõstar (lit. ‘bland’ currant, it is rather tasteless), alpine currant, Ribes alpinum
- Must sõstar, common-or-garden blackcurrant, R. nigrum
- Karvane sõstar (lit. ‘furry’ currant), rarer, the wild or downy currant, R. spicatum
- Punane sõstar, the redcurrant, R. rubrum, will grow, with a little encouragement.

Sõstramäe (Sõstramägi) 
Lit. currant hill (see Mäe for discussion). There used to be a farm of that name some 400 m away due S.

Rowing base. Road leading to same on Harku järv (lake).
