Names
Veski (Veski)
Mill: See on vesi tema veskile: that’s grist (in this case water) to his mill. This is a contraction of earlier vesikivi, from vesi + kivi (see Vee + Kivi). If prefixed by käsi (hand), it becomes ‘quern’, and given language’s tendency to shorten common words, this was probably the original meaning.
Veskilise (Veskiline)
Miller’s customer/caller. Something or someone involved with a mill (client, supplier, passer-by...). One of a wind-themed group. See Veskimetsa.
Veskimetsa (Veskimets)
Mill woods, woods near/by the mill. Host to a a wind-themed group. See Veskimäe.
Veskiposti (Veskipost)
Aka Lutheri Post. Station on the former Tallinn-Viljandi narrow-gauge railway. Short for Veskipostijaam, where postijaam was a combination railway station cum postal service, as in stage post, probably named after a former watermill on the nearby now-covered Härjapea river. Bearing in mind that milling, or the authority to mill, used to be the apanage of a knight, noble or other member of the ruling-class, this would probably have originated as a kõrvalmõis (see Mõisa).
Vesse (Vesse)
Vesse (or Wesse), one of the leaders of the Jüriöö ülestõus (St. George’s Night Uprising) against the German invaders, beginning 23rd April 1343. Vesse was from Saaremaa where the uprising lasted about two years, and was relieved of his life in 1344. Street named after a children’s novel about the hero as seen through his son’s eyes, by Aadu Hint (born Adolf Edmund Hint, 1910-1989, brother of Johannes Hint, see Silikaltsiidi): Vesse Poeg (Vesse’s Son).
