Names
Väike Rannavärav (0)
Small/Lesser/Lower Coastal gate. First known as Veike Ranna värav (1885), followed by Kleine Strandpforte (1907) then Väike-Rannavärava tn (since they now call it a värav, gate, instead of a tänav, street, the dash disappears) until 1987. Oddly, no medieval street/road names are recorded. Southernmost of the two ‘Coastal gates’ (if there were only 2 of them, shouldn’t it be ‘southernmore’?) See Suur Rannavärav.
Väike-Ameerika (Väike-Ameerika)
[Small, Lesser, Lower] America. Renamed (1950-1991) Kiire during the Soviet occupation. Lesser street in a set of 3, including Suur-Ameerika and Kesk-Ameerika,
Väike-Karja (Väike-Kari)
[Small, Lesser, Lower] Cattle. Written Veike-Karja in 1885, and known from 16-19th C as am, im or auf dem Schilde, by/in/on the shield, although why is unclear. TT, clearly uncertain about this, suggests a possible shield-shaped configuration of the Müürivahe and Karja streets, or signs (Schild in German) indicating Kuradi torn or a nearby watch-house (Schildhaus) as possible reasons. Recorded also as Малая Михайловская ул. (Malaya Mikhaylovskaya, Small Michael’s st), in 1907. See also Suur-Karja.
