Maple, harilik vaher, sometimes known as pikaninapuu (long nose tree), Norway maple, Acer platanoides.
Vahtramäe (Vahtramägi)
Maple hill. It’s flat... This is also the translation of Astrid Lindgren’s children’s books about Emil of Lönneberga, where lönne and berg are Swedish for maple and mount, reviving the eternal question as to the meaning of mägi:mae: never a mountain when in Estonia, usually a hill, but more often the higher ground upon which a farmstead is built on frequently marshy land. Vahulille (Vahulill)
Milkwort, or snakeroot, Polygala spp. Lit. tufted(±) flower. Believed to increase cattle milk yield, hence its Latin name, from the Greek (much milk). One of a meadow flower or grass group. See Helmiku.
Vahuri (Vahur)
Father of Tambeti, hence the hero Jaanus’ grandfathe, in Bornhöhe E.’s novel Tasuja. One of the former names of Lehola. The street was originaly scheduled to be called Jüriöö, but a local entrepreneur (and locals do have a certain veto over local names) claimed that we poor foreigners would never be able to pronounce it, let alone type it into a satnav, and that would be be bad for business. An interesting point already raised in Pääsukese.
